This course will focus on basic English and conversation skills used in a variety of common settings. Students will learn how to effectively communicate on a wide variety of topics. 

The class will use a flipped learning model and students are expected to complete all online work before attending face to face class meetings. 

Face to face class time will be devoted to improving students' confidence and ability to use spoken English.

The course will meet the following DU-Heart core competencies. 

  • Enthusiasm : Self-care - Students will develop learner autonomy through the use of flipped learning.
  • creAtivity : Originality - Students are challenged to express their unique perspectives.
  • Relationship : Communication - Task based speaking activities cultivate human relationships, teamwork, and communication skills.
  • Trust : Community consciousness - Flipped learning requires each student to do their part to prepare for class in advance. 

The course will follow a flipped classroom communicative curriculum with a heavy emphasis placed on peer communication. 

Face to face class time will maximize student speaking time using task based pair and small group activities designed to meet the Communication (Relationship) DU-Heart core competency. 

All students are required to actively participate in class activities to improve their communicative competence and receive appropriate feedback.

This is a course designed to prepare students for the language needed to communicate successfully in a variety of international contexts. 

The course will help students develop a broad vocabulary and the skills needed to express themselves effectively.
